We could all save more but it ain’t always easy. We’ve rounded up five savings strategies that are easy, immediate and come highly recommended by other couples.

1. Create a rule

At Zeta, we've found that couples who are more intentional with their money tend to spend less and save more. Creating simple rules like I will only eat out once/week or I will drink no more than 1 coffee/day will create easy intension and demonstrate results immediately.

2. Split your paycheck

Payroll providers like Gusto allow you to split up your paycheck even before it hits your bank account. Divide up your paycheck so that your "savings" never even hits your checking account. A couple I worked with saved nearly $15,000 in one year using this trick!

3. Sell stuff you already own

My favorite tactic to creating an emergency account or a slush fund is to take stuff you own and sell it via Craigslist or FB Marketplace. You'll be amazed at how much junk you have lying around that someone else will pay you good money for! I had a couple earn an extra $1000 just by identifying 10 things in their house they wanted to give away.

4. Reduce your interest rate on your debt

This is much easier to do with credit cards. Call your credit card company and ask them to reduce your rate. Tell them you're thinking of transferring the balance (leverage!) and should they agree, you'll see immediate savings on your payments!

5. Cancel 3 bills

When talking to people about their money, I often find that we sign up for things we don't always need - a subscription box, a service we don't use or something new we bought that we didn't really want. Either cancel or return one of those items and voila, you'll instantly have more money to put into savings!
